
Where is Oman located?
Oman is a country located in the Middle East, on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest. The capital and largest city of Oman is Muscat.
The country has a total area of 309,500 square kilometers (119,500 sq mi), making it slightly larger than Italy or twice the size of New Mexico. It has a long coastline along the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, with a total length of 3,165 kilometers (1,967 mi).
Geography of Oman
Oman is divided into eleven governorates: Muscat, Dhofar, Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, Al Buraimi, Al Wusta, Ash Sharqiyah North, Ash Sharqiyah South, Dhahirah, Musandam and Zufar. The terrain is mostly desert plains and mountains; there are also some fertile coastal plains.
The highest point in Oman is Jabal Shams at 3,009 meters (9,876 ft) above sea level. The climate in Oman is generally hot and dry with temperatures ranging from 10°C (50°F) in winter to 40°C (104°F) in summer. Rainfall is scarce but more common in the northern part of the country.
History of Oman
Oman has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was an important trading center for centuries. In ancient times it was known as Magan and was part of several empires including those of Assyria and Persia. In 1507 it became an independent state under its current name.
In modern times Oman has become an important regional power due to its strategic location on the Arabian Peninsula. It has close ties with both Iran and Saudi Arabia and plays an active role in regional politics. It also maintains strong economic ties with countries such as India and China.
Culture of Oman
Oman has a rich culture that reflects its history as a trading nation. Traditional music and dance are popular forms of entertainment while traditional clothing such as dishdasha for men and abaya for women are still worn by many people. Islam is the official religion but other faiths such as Christianity are also practiced.
The cuisine of Oman is heavily influenced by Indian and Persian cuisine with dishes such as kabsa (rice cooked with meat) being popular. Dates are also widely eaten as they are grown throughout the country.
